      • WEATHER ANTONY GORMLEY

Antony Gormley Weather: de luxe edition ISBN: 978-1-911253-39-6 Edition size: 75 Date: 2022 Format: Signed Limited Edition Dimensions: 31 x 38cm Medium: Etching A collaboration between Antony Gormley and Colm Tóibín. For the artist Antony Gormley and novelist Colm Tóibín, the unpredictability and drama of the weather is the connecting strand in their long-anticipated collaboration. In Antony Gormley’s delicate and light-filled drawings of the ‘liminal realm of the north Norfolk coast’, published here for the first time, he evokes ‘the blurring of perception between solid, aerial, and liquid’, using Chinese brushes to apply ink to water-flooded paper. He reflects on the drawings ‘as one might look at the marks left by the receding flood: dried salt on a rock, or the tideline on a beach.’ Colm Tóibín’s accompanying story, tender and deeply poetic, finds the protagonist on an Irish seashore in a torrential rainstorm that with other sights, smells and familiar phrases triggers memories of childhood summers decades earlier, when the vagaries of the weather disrupt his family’s leisurely enjoyment of the sea and the strand, as ‘the rain became hard, relentless, like something angry that had been released.’ Weather is published as a signed limited edition of 75 de luxe copies, slipcased and accompanied by a signed and numbered original etching by Antony Gormley, sized 31 x 38 cm and printed on 270 gsm Arches Vélin at Thumbprint Editions, London.

Titled "End of the line", the final illustration shows a natural terminus and Betjeman pondering the green landscape that both confines and lies beyond Metro-Land. It is captioned, "The houses of Metro-land never got as far as Verney Junction. Grass triumphs. And I must say I'm rather glad". Description Oblong octavo. • Peter Blake Under Milk Wood: de luxe edition

Dimensions: 420 x 320mm Medium: Ink-jet print Format: Hand-bound, placed in a solander box Edition size: 100 Date: 2013 ISBN: 9781907587733 Internationally acclaimed for its eccentricity and widely admired for its lovelorn lyricism, Dylan Thomas’s groundbreaking 1954 ‘play for voices’, Under Milk Wood, has long echoed in the imagination of the founding father of British Pop Art, Sir Peter Blake. This ‘greenleaved sermon on the innocence of men’ has filled the spaces of Blake’s studio, played and replayed aloud. It also prompted several pilgrimages to Thomas’s creative refuge at Laugharne, Carmarthenshire. Blake’s obsession with Under Milk Wood has spanned well over 30 years, hence the rich volume of material published here. Revealed here with the definitive play text are the ‘dismays and rainbows’ of this great artist’s richly detailed sequences. Comprising 140 watercolours, pencil portraits and collages, this is one of his most distinctive and significant single bodies of work. This signed limited edition of 100 copies is hand-bound and housed in a solander box created by The Fine Book Bindery. Each copy contains the loose leaf signed and numbered print, The Sailors’ Arms (pictured).

      • Paris Escapades Peter Blake

Paris Escapades: de luxe ed Dimensions: 320 x 240mm Artist: Peter Blake, Marco Livingstone Medium: Ink-jet print Format: Hand-bound, placed in a solander box Edition size: 75 Date: 2011 Paris Escapades is a beautiful book of Paris collages by Sir Peter Blake. In this enjoyable edition, Blake demonstrates his unerring gift for unexpected juxtapositions and visual story-telling. His collages demonstrate an almost childlike enthusiasm for Paris and an eye no less acute for having a permanent twinkle. Many familiar Paris monuments feature, while submerged in extraordinary events that turn them into the stuff of dreams. There is enough air of reality in some pictures, such as the Seine freezing over, to entrap the unwary spectator. Elephants hover above Notre Dame, and Paris becomes populated by the rich imagination of a visionary of our time. Each of the 28 images in Paris Escapades is accompanied by the artist’s wry commentaries. The book is also preceded by an interview with Marco Livingstone in which Blake discusses his lifelong involvement with collage. Signed limited edition of 75 copies, each hand-bound and housed in a solander box with the signed and numbered loose-leaf original ink-jet print, Shooting Stars (pictured).

      • Peter Blake Venice Fantasies: de luxe edition

Venice Fantasies: de luxe edition quantity Dimensions: 320 x 240mm Artist: Peter Blake, Marco Livingstone Format: Hand-bound and slipcased Edition size: 75 Date: 2009 Sir Peter Blake’s Venice Fantasies, made in his mid-seventies with the same lightness of touch and fresh eye that has distinguished all his work, are marked by his characteristic wry humour and unerring sense of the absurd. Fifty years after his first trip to the most magical of Italian cities, Blake returned to Venice in 2007. Subsequently he created this series of affectionate and often frankly preposterous tributes to the city. Taking as his cue the Surrealist collages of Max Ernst and others, he engages in the same sort of time travel and unlikely alliances that marked his celebrated cover design for the Beatles LP Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Teeming with detail, this humorous and highly entertaining collection of pictures show Blake at his imaginative best. The book also contains whimsical texts by Blake, written in a similarly playful manner. Above all, this is an artwork which highlights the pleasure to be had in such a city as Venice. The slipcased de luxe edition consisted of 75 signed and numbered copies. Each is accompanied by a signed original silkscreen print by Peter Blake entitled Mickey’s Birthday Party.

      • Peter Blake: Alphabets (2010)

Peter Blake, Text by Mel Gooding Slipcased, cloth and casebound hardback with endbands matching red cloth and yellow doublures. H310 x W255 mm. 224 pages. Edition of 600, of which this is #471. Acquired from The Plantagenet King, 3 November 2022. Photos: Books on Books Collection. Displayed with permission of the artist. Peter Blake has made the alphabet itself a subject of so many of his print series and exhibitions that Peter Blake: Alphabets and the exhibition associated with it stand as a retrospective. Naturally it showcases his style and signature techniques. It also showcases an outward and inward appraising wit that leads to humorous juxtapositions like the poster of “T for The Beatles” with the collage of “U for Unusual People”. But most of all it proves the variety and unity that a creativity-stimulating constraint like the alphabet can yield. With Blake’s wide-ranging uses of the alphabet, Mel Gooding’s commentary and the volume’s elegant design and production, Peter Blake: Alphabets serves as both example and reference for alphabet-related artists’ books.

      • Rose Hilton: Something to Keep the Balance

LIMITED EDITION WITH PRINT ISBN: 9781848220256 Artist(s): Rose Hilton Author(s): Andrew Lambirth Format: hardback Year published: 2009 Publisher: Lund Humphries Publisher Location: London Condition: Fine Total Pages: 176 Illustrations: 120 illustrations, 90 in colourThis is a special edition of Rose Hilton: Something to keep the balance which incorporates a new print produced and signed by the artist in an edition of 100 exclusively for this publication and packaged with the book in a slipcase. After showing exceptional early promise, Rose Hilton’s artistic career was brought to an abrupt halt in 1959 when she met the painter Roger Hilton. It was not until 1975, the year of her husband’s death, that Rose Hilton was able to take up the interrupted thread of her work and give it her full attention. Following her husband’s death, Rose strove to recapture the promise and flair of her early years reinterpreted through her experience living beside Roger. Her favoured subjects became the interior, often peopled with figures, still-life and landscape. She brought to these traditional subjects a freshness of handling which owes something to the French artists she admires, and also to English twentieth-century masters such as Ivon Hitchens and Keith Vaughan. Yet the work is very much her own, with a rich though sensitive colour sense and a formal invention that is attractively understated. Outlining Rose Hilton’s life and career, this book, the first on the artist, draws heavily upon diaries Hilton has kept sporadically throughout her life. Skilfully interweaving diary entries throughout the narrative, Andrew Lambirth has created an exceptionally frank portrayal of the emotional and psychological wellsprings of an artist who has had to fight for her identity, but who has won through to genuine acclaim. Thoroughly engrossing, Rose Hilton is essential reading for anyone interested in British art in the twentieth century.

The wrapper is lightly chipped and rubbed at the edges with a couple of marks. A few nicks with some small closed tears but generally remains a very good copy. The wrapper is protected in a removable archival cover. John Betjeman writes of Boyd Harte in his foreword, 'electricity has inspired him with its cleanness and invisibility'. Boyd Harte’s lithographs of London power stations and former generating, lighting and sub-stations are arresting in their simple, colourful strength. At the time of publication 'Temples of Power' sparked a great interest in power stations amongst historians and is regarded by many to be directly responsible for the re-modelling of Bankside Power Station as Tate Modern. A handsome production and very scarce to find with the very elusive wrapper in collectible condition. BINDING: Hardcover CONDITION: Near Fine

      • Quentin Blake: Pens, Ink and Places

special edition of Quentin Blake’s Pens, Ink and Places is one of just 200 copies, each signed and numbered by the artist himself. Following the enormous success of Words and Pictures and Beyond the Page, this third volume continues a narrative of visual adventures of unusual diversity. It ranges from a touching series of vignettes for Great Ormond Street Hospital to gigantic drawings for the Jerwood Gallery in Hastings; from the sombre apocalyptic landscapes of Riddley Walker to the energetic fantasy of Billy and the Minpins, and includes interpretations of work by John Ruskin, La Fontaine, Lucius Apuleius and Beatrix Potter. The accompanying commentary – straight, as it were, from the drawing board – explores the challenges and opportunities in the creation of drawings known around the world, as well as others seen here for the first time. It is clear from every page of this informative and richly illustrated volume that there has been no slackening of brio in the scratchy pen nib of an artist who has been called the ‘Godfather of Illustration’. Comes with blue slip-cover presentation case.

      • Allen Jones

Hardcover – Illustrated, 24 Nov. 2014 by Marco Livingstone (Author), Natalie Ferris (Author) Entertaining and provocative in equal measure, Allen Jones RA was at the forefront of the British Pop Art movement in the early 1960s, alongside Royal College of Art contemporaries David Hockney RA, Derek Boshier and Peter Phillips. Despite, somewhat extraordinarily, being expelled from the RCA after a year, as ‘an example’ to similarly independent-minded students, Jones has been hugely influential, not just in the art world but across fashion, graphic design, film and music. This book explores the range of Jones’s 50-year career, focusing not just on his sculptures but also on his works in watercolour, lithography and painting. While best-known for his highly sexualised imagery, particularly his ‘women as furniture’ series, this volume reveals an artist deeply influenced by European Modernism, whose works possess an innate sense of humour and exuberant use of colour. Alongside engaging analyses of Jones’s place in the canon of twentieth-century art, this volume seeks to reappraise feminist reactions to Jones from a contemporary perspective, exploring his continuous preoccupation with androgynous and transgender forms.

SBN: 9780853319900 Artist(s): Barbara Rae Author(s): Bill Hare, Andrew Lambirth & Gareth Wardell Format: hardback Edition: First Year published: 2008 Publisher: Lund Humphries Publisher Location: London Signed: Yes Total Pages: 192 Illustrations: 200 colour and 20 b&w Barbara Rae Prints This book is the first comprehensive study of Barbara Rae’s prints. In it, Andrew Lambirth traces her development as a printmaker. Gareth Wardell profiles the master printmakers Rae has collaborated with, offering a fascinating insight into her practice and the creative partnerships that have shaped much of her work. Illustrated with key prints spanning Rae’s career, this book celebrates the art of one of Britain’s most gifted and original printmakers. This is the first fully illustrated monograph of Barbara Rae’s career to date. One of Britain’s outstanding contemporary painters, Rae is a Royal Academician and the recipient of numerous awards including two doctorates and Commander of the British Empire (CBE). Known for their use of bright and contrasting colour, Rae’s paintings combine the influence of landscape and travel with painterly abstraction. Many of her paintings can be found in public collections, including the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh; the Whitworth, Manchester; Hugh Lane Gallery, Dublin and the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington. Educated at Edinburgh College of Art, Barbara Rae has always been influenced by her surroundings in her work. A scholarship allowed her to explore Europe for the first time in 1966 and this was the beginning of her lifelong passion for travel. This book charts the development of her work alongside her journeys around the globe, and the chapters are thus divided topographically: from ‘Ireland’ and ‘Spain’ to ‘Arizona’ and ‘South Africa’. The reader comes to an understanding of the importance of place in Rae’s work – in particular, the human traces and patterns of history that are left on a landscape – and at the same time gains an insight into how the structure of a landscape is simply the starting point for an experimental studio process, involving paint, colour and collage, that borders on abstraction. Her ‘pure pleasure of painting’ is evident in the dynamic and experimental works shown. In an extensive interview by Andrew Lambirth, Rae reveals the fascinating secrets of what goes on in her studio, such as throwing buckets of water at her paintings and working on large scale pictures on the floor; letting them accumulate splatters as part of their ‘life’. An essay by Bill Hare situates the work in its twentieth- and twenty-first-century contexts. The contribution of the authors combined with the lavish and extensive illustrations ensure that this book is an important and engaging homage to the life and work of this extraordinary painter. Size (cm): 25 x 30

      • History of Venice in Painting

Hardcover – Illustrated, 8 Nov. 2007 by Georges Duby (Author), Guy Lobrichon (Author), Terisio Pignatti (Author), Daniel Russo (Author) Venice is a magical city. For centuries, Venice has enchanted visitors with its magnificent architecture and romantic canals. As a lone republic amid mostly monarchical Europe, Venice equally amazed philosophers and poets, leading Wordsworth to hail this floating city of more than one hundred islands as “the oldest Child of Liberty.” Yet it is the imprint Venice left in the realm of painting, not only as a subject that inspired visiting artists from Europe and beyond, but more importantly as the seat of a new school of painting, for which Venice should best be remembered. The Venetian School of painting was developed during the Renaissance, featuring such celebrated painters as Bellini, Mantegna, Giorgione, and Titian. Emphasizing Venice’s pervasive sunlight and glowing color in their works, these painters influenced centuries of painters to come. The authors of The History of Venice in Painting explain how the Venetian School, in addition to other attractions like Carnival, attracted legions of tourists to Venice, making it an obligatory stop on the “Grand Tour” that should complete any eighteenth-century gentleman’s cultural education. Visitors also came to Venice to paint the city’s famous light for themselves, most notably J.M.W. Turner and Claude Monet. Sun-soaked Venice, with light reflecting off the waters of its many canals, was indeed an Impressionist’s dream. This vibrantly illustrated text traces the history of the Republic of Venice through its artistic heritage, from medieval mosaics to twentieth-century Futurist paintings. Including 350 full-color images, as well as 4 breathtaking gatefolds, The History of Venice in Painting is a treasure-trove of art, history, and culture. Here such panoramas as religious processions and gondolas criss-crossing the Grand Canal are displayed in a size befitting the subject’s grandeur. • The History of Paris in Painting

Hardcover – Illustrated, 31 Oct. 2020 by Georges Duby A sumptuous artistic tribute to the city of light, this hardcover, slip cased volume brings Paris to life in paintings that range from the medieval to the modern "Paris is a moveable feast," Ernest Hemingway once proclaimed. The city of light, or the city of love, Paris is indeed a feast for the senses. Paris's rich history has been justly captured by the many artists sheltered by its garrets and supported by its patrons for centuries. Finally the story and grandeur of this beautiful city are revealed in this luxurious slipcased volume. The over 300 full-colour illustrations, including four breathtaking gatefolds, present Paris from its days as a medieval city on the Ile de la Cité, in the middle of the Seine River, through the tumultuous days of the French Revolution, to the Haussmannization of Paris, when much of the city was razed to make way for broad boulevards emanating from the Arc de Triomphe.

      • The History of Rome in Painting

by Maria Theresa Caracciolo (Editor), Jacqueline Champeaux (Editor), Roselyne De Ayala (Editor) A sumptuously illustrated history of Rome, the Eternal City―the capital of Italy and world art―as captured by painters from the Antiquity through the twentieth century, in one luxurious hardcover volume with slipcase. From its ancient status as the jewel of an empire to its modern incarnation as a troubled, yet culturally vibrant European capital, Rome has compelled the imagination of artists for over two thousand years. Now, in The History of Rome in Painting, that entire span is brought to life through the visions of the greatest painters of the past millennium. As two previous Abbeville volumes, The History of Paris in Painting and The History of Venice in Painting, did for their respective cities, Rome provides the most luxurious possible visual presentation of one of the world’s most beautiful places. Editors Maria Teresa Caracciolo and Roselyne de Ayala, with the help of six other expert contributors, guide the reader through the colorful and tumultuous history of the Eternal City, from its humble origins as a village on the Palatine Hill to the cultural explosion of the Renaissance, from its reinvention as the capital of modern Italy to the watershed of the Lateran Treaty and beyond. Here you will find portraits of the city’s most famous and controversial leaders―from Julius Caesar to Mussolini―as well as its long succession of popes and aristocratic families. Depicted also, in brilliant detail, are the city’s architectural and sculptural landmarks: Saint Peter’s Basilica, Trajan’s Column, the Fontana di Trevi, and many more. With its more than three hundred full-color illustrations, including four spectacular gatefolds; its insightful text, written by leading art historians; and its valuable apparatus, including capsule biographies of 175 artists; The History of Rome in Painting is an important achievement in scholarship and publishing and a fitting tribute to the Eternal City. It is a true feast for art lovers, travelers, and historians alike. In art history as in the ancient Empire, "all roads lead to Rome"; here in one volume is the city as generations of painters have sought it, dreamed it, and captured it for all time. Like its

      • Albrecht Durer Hardcover – Norbert Wolf (Author)

Drawing on the latest research, this luxurious volume presents an exciting new interpretation of Durer, both as a man and as an artist. Durer's prints and drawings inspired centuries of artists both during his life and after his death. Yet his talent as a painter and colourist, and his enthusiasm for the scientific world have not been widely appreciated. Durer's influence was both international and intergenerational; indeed Picasso claimed to have been inspired by the sixteenth-century artist. Reproduced in stunning detail and including illustrations of Durer's most famous prints and drawings, a catalogue raisonne of his paintings, and biographical research, this book presents a Durer for the twenty-first century. Producing more self-portraits than any other artist of his day; mass marketing his best-selling prints; even inventing his own monogram logo; Albrecht Durer was commercially astute long before today's generation of slick self-promoters and savvy mega-bucks artists. There are 55 extant Durer's, of which 17 are in dispute. Using the very latest scientific research, this book puts all arguments to bed resulting in the definitive catalogue raisonne of the paintings.

      • Le Pop art

Hardcover – 18 Oct. 2000 by Marco Livingstone (Author) 4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars (4) See all languages and editions La Pop Art est la manifestation la plus populaire de l'art moderne.

      • Allen Jones Moves by Mark Hudson

Allen Jones has created some of the most powerful and provocative images of the past half century. His Pop Art paintings are icons of Swinging London, while his controversial Furniture sculptures helped set the dystopian mood of the 1970s, the era of A Clockwork Orange and Punk, on which he exerted a crucial influence. Yet Jones’s art hasn’t stood still. From early shaped canvases to current experiments with virtual reality and AI, Jones’s career has developed through a succession of formal innovations – “moves” as he calls them – which are the subject of this ground breaking publication. Lavishly illustrated with many little-seen images, the book examines Jones’s personal iconography, and – not least – his contested approach to the female form in greater depth than any previous study. Far from uncritically reflecting the “male gaze”, as some have claimed, Jones’s art has been preoccupied with themes of gender convergence and interchangeability from the outset. Allen Jones Moves takes us inside the artist’s thinking at the key junctures of his career, highlighting the intellectual curiosity that has powered a life of constant, intense creative activity.

      • Velázquez. The Complete Works

Hardcover – July 1, 2020 by Jose Lopez-Rey (Author), Odile Delenda (Author) Manet called him “the greatest painter of all.” Picasso was so inspired by his masterpiece Las Meninas that he painted 44 variations of it. Francis Bacon painted a study of his portrait of Pope Innocent X. Monet and Renoir, Corot and Courbet, Degas and Dalí… for so many champions of art history, the ultimate sounding board was—and remains—Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez (1599–1660). This monograph edition brings together Velázquez’s complete works with a selection of enlarged details and photography of recently restored paintings, achieved through the joint initiative of TASCHEN and the Wildenstein Institute. The dazzling images are accompanied by insightful commentary from José López-Rey on Velázquez’s interest in human life and his equal attention to all subjects, from an old woman frying eggs to a pope or king, as well as his commitment to color and light, which would influence the Impressionists over two centuries later.
