Zodiac (Deluxe Edition with Signed Art Print): A Graphic Memoir Hardcover – Special Edition, 30 Jan. 2024 by Ai Weiwei (Author), Elettra Stamboulis (Author) 4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars (9) In this beautifully illustrated and deeply philosophical graphic memoir, legendary artist Ai Weiwei explores the connection between artistic expression and intellectual freedom through the lens of the Chinese zodiac. Within this deluxe edition is an exclusive, limited-edition art print, signed by Ai Weiwei and stamped with gold foil. As a child living in exile during the Cultural Revolution, Ai Weiwei often found himself with nothing to read but government-approved comic books. Although they were restricted by the confines of political propaganda, Ai Weiwei was struck by the artists' ability to express their thoughts on art and humanity through graphic storytelling. Now, decades later, Ai Weiwei and Italian comic artist Gianluca Costantini present Zodiac, Ai Weiwei's first graphic memoir. Inspired by the twelve signs of the Chinese zodiac and their associated human characteristics, Ai Weiwei masterfully interweaves ancient Chinese folklore with stories of his life, family, and career. The narrative shifts back and forth through the years--at once in the past, present, and future--mirroring memory and our relationship to time. As readers delve deeper into the beautifully illustrated pages of Zodiac, they will find not only a personal history of Ai Weiwei and an examination of the sociopolitical climate in which he makes his art, but a philosophical exploration of what it means to find oneself through art and freedom of expression. Contemplative and political, Zodiac will inspire readers to return again and again to Ai Weiwei's musings on the relationship between art, time, and our shared humanity.

For the artist Antony Gormley and novelist Colm Tóibín, the unpredictability and drama of the weather is the connecting strand in their long-anticipated collaboration. In Antony Gormley’s delicate and light-filled drawings of the ‘liminal realm of the north Norfolk coast’, published here for the first time, he evokes ‘the blurring of perception between solid, aerial, and liquid’, using Chinese brushes to apply ink to water-flooded paper. He reflects on the drawings ‘as one might look at the marks left by the receding flood: dried salt on a rock, or the tideline on a beach.’
Peter Blake Venice Fantasies: de luxe edition Dimensions: 320 x 240mm Artist: Peter Blake, Marco Livingstone Format: Hand-bound and slipcased Edition size: 75 Date: 2009 Sir Peter Blake’s Venice Fantasies, made in his mid-seventies with the same lightness of touch and fresh eye that has distinguished all his work, are marked by his characteristic wry humour and unerring sense of the absurd. Fifty years after his first trip to the most magical of Italian cities, Blake returned to Venice in 2007. Subsequently he created this series of affectionate and often frankly preposterous tributes to the city. Taking as his cue the Surrealist collages of Max Ernst and others, he engages in the same sort of time travel and unlikely alliances that marked his celebrated cover design for the Beatles LP Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Teeming with detail, this humorous and highly entertaining collection of pictures show Blake at his imaginative best. The book also contains whimsical texts by Blake, written in a similarly playful manner. Above all, this is an artwork which highlights the pleasure to be had in such a city as Venice. The slipcased de luxe edition consisted of 75 signed and numbered copies. Each is accompanied by a signed original silkscreen print by Peter Blake entitled Mickey’s Birthday Party.

In this enjoyable edition, Blake demonstrates his unerring gift for unexpected juxtapositions and visual story-telling. His collages demonstrate an almost childlike enthusiasm for Paris and an eye no less acute for having a permanent twinkle. Many familiar Paris monuments feature, while submerged in extraordinary events that turn them into the stuff of dreams. There is enough air of reality in some pictures, such as the Seine freezing over, to entrap the unwary spectator. Elephants hover above Notre Dame, and Paris becomes populated by the rich imagination of a visionary of our time. Each of the 28 images in Paris Escapades is accompanied by the artist’s wry commentaries. The book is also preceded by an interview with Marco Livingstone in which Blake discusses his lifelong involvement with collage. Signed limited edition of 75 copies, each hand-bound and housed in a solander box with the signed and numbered loose-leaf original ink-jet print, Shooting Stars

In the early summer of 1971, I was invited to lunch at a farmhouse near Montcuq, in the Lot. The guests were an unusual mixture for the time and place, the majority being Dutch (so we spoke English rather the customary Franglais), and mostly artists, instead of the usual suspects: White Russian royalty, super-rich British property developers, énarques from the grander Paris ministries, and elderly Bloomsbury novelists. The hostess was a cousin of Mondrian through his uncle Frits, although I didn’t know this at the time. After lunch I admired a striking pair of bedside cabinets in an upstairs bedroom and was told that they had been inherited after the War, and sent down from The Hague in the 1950s with other furniture. On the piece displayed, the top (which resembled alabaster) had been badly damaged in transit and the pieces glued back together. Many years later the same two prototypes (supposedly they were never put into production, both because Mondrian left London shortly afterwards for New York; and due to the introduction of wartime ‘Utility Furniture’) turned up at Gigouzac with a letter from a notaire saying that it was the fulfilment of a bequest in the Will* of a recently deceased woman living near Montcuq. The workshop’s return address label (misspelled -by a foreigner perhaps?) was discovered during recent restoration when repairs were carried out, including extensive retouching of the damaged paintwork, new tops & plinths, and protective acrylic covers. Please feel free to look at all the art books it contains (use the gloves provided), and do use the laptop to view videos featuring the artists in the exhibition. *the Will included a confidentiality clause regarding the exact provenance, authorship, ownership status and origins of the cabinets, which has been strictly adhered to in this caption.
